Pastor's Reflections & Various Sermons

Monthly faith reflections and other ponderings and sermons from the pastor.

Something to think about

6/20/2019

The flowThe work of opening head, heart, and body connects with this call into family, work, and public life. But how can you describe it?
My mother-in-law is a retired pastor and spiritual director. She uses the images of spring and stream.
A stream flows outward but without a living source—the spring—it cannot be sustained. It peters out. Gets used up. The daily practices that reconnect your head, heart, and body in love and open them to love also sustain you in love in your family, workplace, and the public arena.
We have a rain barrel. When it’s empty, I open the diverter on the downspout, and rain from the roof of our house fills it. When it’s full, I close the diverter, and we go about emptying the rain barrel again. We open the barrel spigot and empty it to water plants and play with water.
Some faith practices open us to be filled. Others open us to be emptied. Fill and empty, worship and serve, work and rest. Like breath, like a pulsing heart.
A spring constantly fills, a stream constantly empties. The Holy Spirit guide you into that flow of forgiveness and love—head, heart, and body open to give and receive.
