Pastor's Reflections & Various Sermons

Monthly faith reflections and other ponderings and sermons from the pastor.

Looking forward to Sunday Worship

6/13/2019

In family, at work, in public

With the three inner spaces—head, heart, and body—there are three arenas of life:
private (family and friends) organizational (work, church, etc)
public (police chiefs, mayors, congress people, bishops, CEOs, etc)

When Jesus called, his first disciples left family and work: “Immediately they [James and John, commercial fisherman] left the boat and their father, and followed him.” Where did they go? With Jesus, into the public arena.

The temptation to retreat into private life is so strong! The problems are so big! We are so small! Public life is so ugly, contentious, and rude! So theologian Douglas John Hall says the chief sin of our time is not pride but sloth! He invites Christians to “counter such defeatism.”

“See,” Jesus said, “I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Jesus told disciples, “You the light of the world,” and compared them to yeast, leavening the whole dough. Head-, heart-, and mind-opening faith acts also in public, for the good of the whole neighborhood and city.
